History of 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu

In the moments following his submission victory over the legendary Royler Gracie (watch the full match) at the 2003 ADCC Submission Championships, Eddie Bravo began the transition from years of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu study under Jean Jacques Machado to a new No-Gi based Jiu-Jitsu system. The momentum of his achievement and the passion to discover new possibilities, Eddie began to develop the most complete No-Gi Jiu Jitsu curriculum.

What is 10th Planet

10th Planet Jiu Jitsu can be defined as anything that works at a high level in No-Gi grappling and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA).

The primary goal is to develop the most effective style of grappling when strikes to the head are involved. Whether to defend ones self in a street altercation, or to reach for victory in an MMA fight, the most important aspect of Jiu Jitsu to Eddie Bravo, is how Jiu Jitsu is applied when someone is trying to strike you.

How it works

Eddie Bravo recognized the importance of maintaining a superior clinching technique with strong overhooks and underhooks. The need for a linear system of techniques that could flow together seamlessly without using the traditional Gi training attire which brought about an unrealistic approach to MMA.

10th Planet techniques are uniquely identified with positions such as the Rubber Guard, The Twister, but more importantly 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu embodies a philosophy. With an open-minded nature and a sense of creativity, Eddie established the foundation of what is 10th Planet No-Gi Jiu Jitsu system.

This system acknowledges the necessity of experimentation, the process of change, and the recognition of value in all styles of grappling. With this in mind, 10th Planet aims to avoid stagnation, while continuously evolving in a sport that is constantly changing.

In 2007, 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu began to expand beyond the headquarters in Los Angeles, CA. With an appreciation for the creativity and success of Eddie Bravo’s unique, No-Gi style of Jiu Jitsu, new schools would emerge. As of 2021, 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Affiliates can be found in numerous locations around the world across North America, Europe, Australia, South Korea, Asia, and now the Middle East.

How we got started in Lebanon

After being introduced to the 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu system at Evolve MMA in Singapore, the goal was to replicate the energy and community in Lebanon.

In December 2018, 10th Planet Beirut became the first affiliate in the Middle East.

Initially operating at Tristar Gym Lebanon from 2018-2020, we aimed to spread Jiu Jitsu across Lebanon so we started by opening classes in Dawra, Mtaylib, & Ghazir.

Facing challenges in 2019-2020 due to COVID, shutdowns, and the financial crisis, we had to adapt.

Phase 2 involved overcoming difficulties and branching out to establish our own academy in Zouk Mosbeh where we started building a solid team till 2022.

In January of 2023, Phase 3 began when we moved to a 400 sqm facility in the heart of Zalka, marking a significant step towards revolutionizing the martial arts industry in Lebanon.

Follow the movement and stay updated.
